Official Import Rules

The Maldives has strict import rules due to its island ecosystem. Requirements: ISO microchip, rabies vaccination, FAVN titer test (≥0.5 IU/ml), FVRCP vaccination, and an import permit from the Ministry of Fisheries & Agriculture — apply 4–6 weeks before travel. A health certificate issued within 7 days of travel is required. All imported dogs undergo a mandatory 30-day quarantine at a government facility. Arrival through Velana International Airport (MLE) Malé.

Medical Roadmap

1

Microchip

ISO 11784/11785 microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination. The microchip number must match every certificate.

2

Rabies vaccination

Rabies vaccination must be valid before travel. Most routes require at least 21 days after a primary vaccination.

3

Health certificate or pet passport

Use an EU pet passport where accepted, or a government-endorsed animal health certificate for this route.

4

Rabies titer test

Build in the approved-lab antibody test and any mandatory waiting period before booking the flight.

5

Travel day

Carry originals, confirm airline pet acceptance, and keep the official authority page saved offline.

City & Housing Notes

Malé is the only real urban centre. The Maldives is primarily a resort destination — most resorts do NOT allow personal pets. Bringing a dog is only practical if you're relocating to live on Malé or a residential island. Vet care is extremely limited.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Very limited vet care. Malé has one or two basic clinics. No specialist or emergency vet facilities. For serious medical issues, evacuation to Sri Lanka or India is the only option. Bring a comprehensive first-aid kit and stock of medications.

Leaving Maldives With Your Dog

Exit requires a health certificate and export permit from the Ministry of Fisheries & Agriculture. Processing takes 3–5 working days.

Videos & Route Walkthroughs

Use videos as lived-experience context, not as legal authority. Search for recent dog-owner route reports, airport collection walkthroughs, crate-loading examples and relocation-agent explainers, then verify every rule against the official source above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it practical to bring a dog to the Maldives?

Only if relocating to Malé long-term. The quarantine, limited vet care, and resort-focused tourism infrastructure make it impractical for short stays.

Do resorts allow pets?

No. Maldivian resorts do not allow personal pets. The pet import process is only relevant for residents of Malé or local islands.

How limited is vet care?

Extremely. One or two basic clinics in Malé. No emergency or specialist services. For anything serious, you'd need to evacuate to Colombo or Trivandrum.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
