United Kingdom

Vet requirements, breed rules, airline realities and what happens at the border · updated 2026-07-13

Official Import Rules

Dogs entering Great Britain need a microchip (fitted before rabies vaccination), a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel, and either an EU/GB-recognised pet passport or an Animal Health Certificate / GB health certificate depending on origin. Entry must be via an approved route and carrier. Dogs (unlike cats) must also have tapeworm treatment administered by a vet 24–120 hours before arrival.

Medical Roadmap

1

Microchip

ISO 11784/11785 microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination. The microchip number must match every certificate.

2

Rabies vaccination

Rabies vaccination must be valid before travel. Most routes require at least 21 days after a primary vaccination.

3

Health certificate or pet passport

Use an EU pet passport where accepted, or a government-endorsed animal health certificate for this route.

4

Tapeworm treatment

A vet must administer and record the dog-only Echinococcus treatment in the required pre-arrival window.

5

Travel day

Carry originals, confirm airline pet acceptance, and keep the official authority page saved offline.

Breed & Public-Space Rules

Breed restrictions

The UK bans four types under the Dangerous Dogs Act — Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro — and, since 2024, the XL Bully in England and Wales (existing owners need an exemption certificate; importing an XL Bully is prohibited). Banned types cannot enter even in transit.

Muzzle & leash laws

No general public muzzle law, but exempted restricted breeds must be muzzled and on a lead in public.

Flying In: Cabin, Hold or Cargo

Airlines do not permit pets in the cabin on flights INTO the UK (assistance dogs excepted) — dogs arrive as cargo/AVIH via approved routes, or by approved ferry/Eurotunnel routes with the owner.

Tapeworm treatment

Mandatory Echinococcus multilocularis treatment (praziquantel or equivalent) administered and recorded by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1–5 days) before arrival in GB. Exempt only if arriving directly from Ireland, Finland, Norway or Malta.

Cost Breakdown

Health Cert£100–£250 (AHC)
Tapeworm£20–£60
Cargo Transport£800–£2,500 typical from EU/US

Quarantine Information

No quarantine when fully compliant. Non-compliant dogs face quarantine of up to 4 months or refusal of entry at the owner's expense.

City & Housing Notes

London, Edinburgh, Bristol, and Manchester are extremely dog-friendly cities. The UK has strong tenant rights for pet owners — landlords can no longer impose blanket pet bans since the Tenant Fees Act amendments. Most rental properties now accept dogs. Dogs Protection and RSPCA can provide local resources. The UK has a strong culture of indoor/outdoor dogs, though traffic risk varies by area.

Vets & Health After Arrival

The UK has excellent veterinary care through both NHS-funded practices (via PDSA for qualifying owners) and private practices. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) maintains a register of all licensed practices. For international travel, you need an Official Veterinarian (OV) — not all regular vets are OVs. Register your dog with a local vet within days of arrival. Common parasites: fleas (year-round), ticks (spring-autumn), and lungworm (increasingly common).

Leaving United Kingdom With Your Dog

For onward EU travel a GB-issued AHC is needed per trip; rabies vaccination must remain in date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my dog need tapeworm treatment to enter the UK?

Yes — this is the big dog-specific rule. A vet must administer an approved Echinococcus treatment 24–120 hours before you arrive in Great Britain and record it in the passport or health certificate. Time it carefully: too early or too late and your dog will be refused entry or quarantined.

Can my dog fly in the cabin to the UK?

No airline permits pets in the cabin on flights into the UK (recognised assistance dogs excepted). Most owners either fly the dog as manifest cargo through Heathrow's Animal Reception Centre or drive via Eurotunnel or an approved ferry, where the dog stays with you.

Is my dog's breed banned in the UK?

Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully types are prohibited from import. The assessment is based on physical characteristics, not pedigree paperwork — cross-breeds matching the type can be seized.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
