Official Import Rules

Jamaica has strict import requirements. Dogs need an ISO microchip, rabies vaccination, and a government-endorsed veterinary health certificate. An import permit from the Veterinary Services Division (VSD) of the Ministry of Agriculture is required — apply at least 4 weeks before travel. Additional requirements include FVRCP vaccination and internal/external parasite treatment. All imported dogs undergo a mandatory quarantine period. Arrival through Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) Kingston or Sangster International Airport (MBJ) Montego Bay.

City & Housing Notes

Kingston and Montego Bay have vet facilities. Jamaica has a growing pet culture. Vet care is adequate in Kingston but limited in rural areas. Many villas and gated communities welcome dogs.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Moderate vet care in Kingston. Limited in tourist areas. The Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association regulates the profession. A few clinics offer good quality care. Emergency services are limited outside Kingston.

Leaving Jamaica With Your Dog

Exit requires a health certificate from a VSD-approved vet and an export permit. Processing takes 3–5 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Jamaica strict?

Jamaica is rabies-free and wants to stay that way. Strict import requirements protect the island's disease-free status.

How far in advance should I start?

At least 6 months. The titer test, permit processing, and vaccination timeline all take time.

Is quarantine likely?

Not if all documentation is complete and compliant. Non-compliant animals may face quarantine of up to 6 months at the owner's expense.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
