Official Import Rules

The Dominican Republic requires a current rabies vaccination (at least 30 days old), a government-endorsed veterinary health certificate issued within 15 days of travel, and a health inspection on arrival. No import permit is required for personal pet dogs. Microchip recommended. Arrival through Santo Domingo (SDQ), Punta Cana (PUJ), or Santiago (STI) airports. The Ministry of Agriculture conducts inspections.

Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, and Cabarete/Sosúa have expat communities. Santo Domingo has the best vet infrastructure. The north coast is popular with long-term expats. Pet culture is developing.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Moderate vet care in Santo Domingo. Limited elsewhere. A few English-speaking vets serve the expat community. Costs are affordable. Tropical parasites and tick-borne diseases are concerns.

Leaving Dominican Republic With Your Dog

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DR easy for pet imports?

Very easy. No import permit, no quarantine, and straightforward documentation requirements.

Is vet care available?

In Santo Domingo, yes. Tourist areas like Punta Cana have limited options. Plan for vet emergencies if living outside the capital.

What about tropical diseases?

Heartworm, fleas, and ticks are year-round concerns. Keep your dog on preventive medications and consult with a local vet on arrival.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
