Official Import Rules

South Africa requires a DALRRD import permit (applied for at least 4 weeks before the intended import date), ISO microchip, current rabies vaccination at least 30 days old but not older than 12 months, a government-endorsed health certificate, and proof of internal/external parasite treatment within 14 days of travel. Dogs may arrive at OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg), Cape Town International Airport, or King Shaka International Airport (Durban). The approved port of entry is specified on the individual import permit issued by DALRRD.

Use an EU pet passport where accepted, or a government-endorsed animal health certificate for this route.

4

Rabies titer test

Build in the approved-lab antibody test and any mandatory waiting period before booking the flight.

5

Travel day

Carry originals, confirm airline pet acceptance, and keep the official authority page saved offline.

City & Housing Notes

Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban have good pet infrastructure. South Africa has a strong pet culture. Rental housing generally accepts dogs. Garden complexes and houses with yards are ideal.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Good veterinary care, especially in major cities. Cape Town and Johannesburg have multiple 24-hour clinics. Common parasites: fleas, ticks (including potentially fatal biliary in dogs — less common in dogs), and intestinal worms.

Leaving South Africa With Your Dog

Exiting SA requires a health certificate from a state vet, endorsed by DALRRD. Processing takes 3-5 business days. Book a state vet appointment well in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an import permit?

Yes. Apply through DALRRD at least 4 weeks before your intended import date. If your permit has not arrived within 2 weeks of application, follow up with the permit office directly.

Can my dog fly in the cabin to South Africa?

Most airlines do NOT allow cabin pets on flights to South Africa due to the long flight duration. Cargo is the standard option.

Is there rabies in South Africa?

Yes. Rabies is present in South Africa, particularly in rural areas. Keep your dog vaccinated and avoid contact with wild animals.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
