Official Import Rules

Panama requires a current rabies vaccination (at least 30 days old), a government-endorsed veterinary health certificate issued within 14 days of travel, and an import permit from MIDA (Ministry of Agricultural Development). The health certificate must certify the dog is free from infectious diseases. Microchip recommended. MIDA inspects animals on arrival at Tocumen International Airport (PTY).

City & Housing Notes

Panama City, Boquete, and Coronado are popular expat areas. Panama City has excellent vet care and modern infrastructure. Boquete in the highlands is popular with retirees. US dollar is the currency.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Good vet care in Panama City with several international-standard clinics. Boquete has limited but adequate vet services. Costs are moderate. Tick-borne diseases and tropical parasites require preventive care.

Leaving Panama With Your Dog

Exit requires a health certificate from a MIDA-registered vet. Processing usually takes 1–2 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Panama easy for pet imports?

Yes, relatively straightforward. You need an import permit from MIDA, which can be applied for online, plus standard health documentation.

Does Panama use the US dollar?

Yes, the Balboa is pegged 1:1 to the USD and US dollars are used everywhere. This makes financial planning easy for American expats.

Is Panama City dog-friendly?

Yes. Modern high-rise condos often allow pets, and the city has several good vet clinics. The tropical climate means year-round flea prevention is essential.
