Official Import Rules

Personal pet dogs over 3 months old entering Canada need a valid rabies vaccination certificate identifying the dog; dogs under 3 months are exempt from the rabies requirement but need proof of age. CFIA documentary checks happen at the border. Since 2022 Canada bans commercial imports of dogs from countries it deems high-risk for dog rabies — personal pets are assessed differently from commercial shipments, and the distinction matters for rescues.

Medical Roadmap

1

Microchip

ISO 11784/11785 microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination. The microchip number must match every certificate.

2

Rabies vaccination

Rabies vaccination must be valid before travel. Most routes require at least 21 days after a primary vaccination.

3

Health certificate or pet passport

Use an EU pet passport where accepted, or a government-endorsed animal health certificate for this route.

4

Travel day

Carry originals, confirm airline pet acceptance, and keep the official authority page saved offline.

Breed & Public-Space Rules

Breed restrictions

No federal breed ban for import, but Ontario bans pit bull-type dogs province-wide (entry, even in transit by road, is an offence), and Winnipeg and various municipalities have their own bans. Route planning matters: flying into Toronto with a pit bull-type dog is a genuine problem; Montreal or Calgary may not be.

Muzzle & leash laws

Municipal; restricted breeds in regulated cities require muzzles in public.

Flying In: Cabin, Hold or Cargo

Air Canada allows small dogs in the cabin (carrier + dog up to ~10 kg practical) on most flights; larger dogs as checked baggage or cargo. Air Canada embargoes brachycephalic breeds from checked baggage.

City & Housing Notes

Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary are dog-friendly cities with numerous pet-friendly rentals. Canadian provinces have varying animal welfare laws. Use Rentals.ca and Kijiji for pet-friendly housing. Most landlords accept dogs with a pet deposit.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Canada has excellent veterinary care. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association maintains a directory. 24-hour emergency clinics in major cities. Common parasites: fleas, ticks (Lyme disease risk in some provinces), heartworm (Ontario and eastward), and roundworm.

Leaving Canada With Your Dog

Standard destination-driven rules; CFIA endorses export certificates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Canada really as easy as people say for dogs?

For personal pets from low-risk countries, yes — a valid rabies certificate is often the whole story. The complexity arrives with commercial/rescue imports from high-risk countries, and with breed law: Ontario's pit bull ban applies to visitors, not just residents.

Can I drive through Ontario with my pit bull-type dog?

Ontario's Dog Owners' Liability Act prohibits pit bull-type dogs in the province, with narrow transit exceptions that are risky to rely on. If your route allows it, plan around Ontario or get specific legal advice first.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
